QUOTE The £17 Boots skin cream that sold out in days after independent scientists said it actually worked is being resold on eBay for almost four times the price. Bottles of No7 Protect & Perfect Beauty Serum flew off the shelves after it was reviewed on a BBC2 Horizon programme about the cosmetics industry on Tuesday. Scientists on the show were surprised to find the cream was as effective at reducing sun damage as prescription-only products. More.... ![]() The Boots serum is priced at £16.75, a lot cheaper than many creams But with high street supplies exhausted and disappointed customers being put on waiting lists, many are now looking to profit by reselling bottles on the Internet auction site for up to £65. Independent tests by experts at the University of Manchester found the cream is just as effective as products which are only available from doctors on prescription. The programme featured Lesley Regan, 50, who is Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at St Mary's Hospital, in London. She set out to carve her way through the hype, pseudo-science and tens of millions of pounds spent on marketing beauty and anti-ageing products to find out if any would work. One of the tests looked at the effect of various creams which claimed to turn back the ageing effects of sun damage, such as fine wrinkles. The doctor's research took her to Manchester University where eminent dermatologist Professor Chris Griffiths and his team have carried out independent research into cosmetic anti-ageing products. The study compared the effect of No7 Protect & Perfect on collagen production with the performance of retinoic-acid or Tretinoin - a prescription drug used to treat severe sun damage of the skin. The experts, based at the Dermatology Department at the university, have been studying Tretinoin for years and they were convinced that no over the counter anti-ageing cream could match its effectiveness. However, they were surprised by the results achieved with the Boots product. Professor Griffiths, who is Foundation Professor of Dermatology at the university, said: "At both basic science and clinical levels Boots No7 Protect & Perfect has been shown scientifically to repair photo-aged skin and improve the fine wrinkles associated with photo-ageing." Boots describes the cream as a 'skin-firming and complexion-brightening serum'. The ingredients include peptides, which have been shown to increase the levels of supporting collagen in the skin, and white lupin extract. This is claimed to reduce the breakdown of collagen by enzymes known as matrix metalloproteinases. The company said the Manchester study proved that it had a similar effect to retinoic acid, which is a prescription-only treatment that is known to repair the signs of photo-ageing. Testing was carried out on volunteers, not in test tubes, and by measuring levels of fibrillin, which is one of the skin's proteins that are affected by sun damage to skin. * Repairing skin damage Professor Griffiths' team was actually able to see the serum begin to repair damage to the skin's structure. Women volunteers who tested the products found measurable improvements in wrinkle depth, so miminising the appearance of fine lines. The fact that the product sells for just £17 for a 40ml pot is all the more attractive, given the fact some companies charge hundreds of pounds for creams that are claimed to turn back time. By contrast, the much-hyped La Prairie Cellular range can cost as much as £229 for a small 30ml pot. Boots Beauty Director, Ian Filby, said: "We have been overwhelmed with the response following BBC Horizon, with women literally racing each other to get hold of the last product in stores. "We are getting more stock out to our stores on an hourly basis to manage demand." A message on the company's website next to the product reads simply: 'Sorry, out of stock'. * What makes it so special? Boots claims Protect & Perfect can deliver younger looking skin in just four weeks of use. The cream contains silicone, which it says will enable 'skin-firming and complexion-brightening'. However, the company claims the real long-term benefits are linked to other ingredients. These include antioxidants - vitamin C, mulberry and ginseng - which health experts say mop up free-radical chemicals in the body which damage cells. It also contains lipo-pentapeptide, created from amino acids grown in laboratories. Amino acids are essential to the functioning of every cell in the body. Boots also claims the particular lipo-pentapeptide used in the cream actively promotes the production of fibrillin in the cells between the outer layer of skin and the supporting layer beneath. Fibrillin is a protein associated with the creation of elastin and collagen - the skin's equivalent of the springs found in a mattress. The final element of the serum is an extract from the white lupin flower. It is suggested this slows down the production of collagenase, which is created by sun damage to the skin. In Britain, women in their thousands have made a beeline to Boots to buy No7 Protect & Perfect Beauty Serum following a programme screened on the BBC called ‘Horizon’. Sales of the wonder cream increased by nearly 2000% on the day the programme aired, with 13 being sold every minute. Boots stores across Britain are having to create waiting lists to manage demand from customers keen to experience the proven anti-ageing effects of this serum. Professor Regan’s Beauty Handbook programme saw the scientist investigate the science behind cosmetics, particularly products which claim to prevent and repair the signs of ageing such as pigmentation, lines and wrinkles. ![]() No7 Protect & Perfect was shown scientifically to repair photo-aged skin and improve the fine wrinkles associated with photo-ageing. No7 Protect & Perfect’s affect on collagen production is on par with the performance of retinoic-acid or Tretinoin - prescription drugs used to treat severe sun damage of the skin! v1restore_and_renew_beauty_serum_comp.jpg The good news is that Boots sells an equivalent product the US called No7 Restore & Renew Beauty Serum, which is a similar intensive serum which, in tests carried out by Boots in real-use conditions on their own volunteers, produced similarly strong results. Available from Target for $19.99. Boots own Skincare Scientific Advisor, Steve Barton goes on to say “The complex in No7 Restore & Renew Beauty Serum addresses the different underlying problems with wrinkles – reduced collagen production, increased collagen breakdown, and lost elastin. The product’s ingredients, specially chosen for their beneficial effects on the skin, include amongst other things peptides that have been shown to increase the levels of supporting collagen, and white lupin extract to reduce the breakdown of collagen by enzymes known as matrix metalloproteinases.” Source: http://bootsus.bri-global.com/main.asp?pid=4114&rnd=1473 As mentioned in the last article, Target will be selling it under the name No. 7 Restore & Renew Beauty Serum So is this gonn' be the X-box or BT of the skin world? |

Hi Kellysmom:
Hope you're open minded enough to try this exercise. It's actually a scalp exercise but it also firms the forehead and erases those horizontal lines people see on their foreheads. Tom's Approach. I'll be back with "Rubbing Out Wrinkles" as soon as my scanner behaves itself. Bottom line, you've nothing to lose and may gain more than you hoped for so why not give it a go. |

Did anyone ever get this? Any reviews? Nightline discussed this last night, on how this madness has swept London like a storm. Sales are limited to one per customer and Boots pharmacy is constantly running out! So somebody tell us if it's all that it's cracked up to be.

I have the eye cream. I used it under my eye some and on my entire face.
I can't really tell a difference. But you're supposed to see changes in 4 weeks. I haven't been using it consistently. |

I thought I posted here earlier?
Anyway, I had a bottle...well I still have it, but it's almost gone. I don't see a difference at all, but I don't know if my skin is too "young" |

Children, children, children...It's supposed to banish wrinkles. That means you have to have some before you see them disappear. So stop being greedy and hand that over to those who need it, young 'uns!
